How often do you make your life more complicated than it really has to be?
Our agendas fill up so fast as we rush from one obligation to the next. We get so accustomed to always being “busy” that we think this chaotic lifestyle is normal or even desirable.
Our lives can be crammed with to-dos but begin to lack a sense of purpose. This contributes to increased stress and hormonal imbalances that can harm your emotional and physical health.
Fortunately, when you slow down just a bit and start to question why you feel so overwhelmed and stressed out, you can usually find ways to make your life a lot simpler without sacrificing satisfaction (and in fact even increasing it!).
Today’s Wellness Wednesday post is simple in structure and concept yet has the potential to inspire you to make powerful shifts in your life, one step at a time. You don’t have to turn your life upside down all at once or move to a remote forest and meditate all day to add ease into your life.
I suggest choosing one step that resonates with you and beginning with that today. See what shifts you start to notice, and when you feel drawn to do more, revisit this list and take the next step!
8 Ways to Simplify Your Life Today Inspired by The Whole Cure
Declutter Your Physical Space
Having fewer physical things in your home and workspace is a concrete way to start to simplify. It allows you to be more organized and to start to hone in on what is actually important to you. Clearing physical clutter is also helpful in creating a less cluttered mental space, so this can be a great place to start.
Clear Your Mind
When your mind is chaotic, it is hard to slow down enough to truly listen to what is within. This is where we start to go off track, chasing dreams that are not really our own or filling our days with more and more tasks just to stay busy.
To prevent your brain from being filled to the brim and always on turbo, start by consciously adding in a few minutes of mindfulness, reflection, focus or calm each day. Whether you want to work through the exercises in The Whole Cure (affiliate link) or listen to guided meditations, you can begin to calm your mind and find clarity. Meditation, yoga, deep breathing or journaling are all great places to start to accustom your mind to a simpler pace.
- Choose a chapter of The Whole Cure: 2 Essential Prescriptions to Overcome Overwhelm, Reclaim Balance and Reconnect with a Life You Love! (affiliate link) to work on each week. Focus on the theme of the chapter and gradually complete the reflection, journaling and meditation exercises to explore this theme in your life.

Focus on a Single Task
I will be the first to admit that this is a hard one for me with so many demands pulling me in multiple directions. Studies show that when you focus your efforts on one single task at a time you are more focused, less stressed and accomplished what you need to do more quickly. Start making a conscious effort to do one thing at a time and do it will your full attention.
- Prioritize your day and life by taking an intentional approach with this exercise from The Whole Cure Lifestyle Transformation Program: Mind Module!
Make Multi-Batch Meals
Meal planning and making larger batches of your favorite meals to freeze or have for leftovers can free up energy and time for focusing on tasks other than cooking and washing the dishes. It also gives you a quick and healthy meal option on days when you are exhausted or simply don’t feel like cooking.
These are some of my favorite SimplePureWhole recipes that work perfectly for batch cooking:
- Blueberry Coconut Pecan Oat Gluten-Free Granola (GF, EF, DF, Vegan, low in sugar)
- Natural Nut-Free | Vegan | Gluten-Free Energy Bars (GF, EF, DF, NF, Vegan)
- Simple | Pure | WholeTM Provencal Ratatouille (Grain-Free, GF, DF, EF, Vegan, Paleo, NF)
- Vegan Cauliflower Apple Walnut Soup with Turmeric(Grain-Free, GF, DF, EF, Vegan, Paleo, Sugar-Free)
- Hearty Spiced Vegetable Soup for the Soul (GF, DF, EF, Vegan, NF)
- Braised Kale with Apples and Carrots (Grain-Free, GF, DF, EF, Vegan, Paleo, NF)
Enjoy Simple Pleasures
When we rush from one appointment to another and are constantly busy it can be easy to overlook the simple pleasures we have in everyday life–a piece of fresh fruit, clean sheets, a gentle breeze, holding hands with someone you love, the warmth of the sun. Gratitude and cultivating the power of appreciation are key parts of the wellness prescriptions and powerful stress management strategies I provide in my stress management programs because they are some of the most effective ways to bring us into the present moment.
Those who consciously focus on gratitude experience greater emotional well-being and health than those who do not. Enjoying life’s simple pleasures enhances the value you extract from your life experiences.
Eat More Slowly
When you learn to slow down, you become more mindful. Taking more time to slow down, notice your food and appreciate the eating experience is a powerful practice in mindfulness. Approaching food mindfully involves paying attention to your physical and mental processes while eating, which results in greater awareness. Having the ability to slow down, pause, and remain calm in the present moment can allow you to improve digestion, decrease stress, better recognize hunger signals, and eliminate out-of-control binge eating and overall anxiety. Start by setting down your fork between bites to slow down eating and chew more thoroughly.
- Cultivate intuitive eating with these strategies.
- Follow the mindfulness diet for better blood sugar control, improved digestion and a more balanced weight.
Batch Your Tasks
Another way to improve your focus and efficiency by simplifying the way you approach tasks is to batch your tasks and dedicate a specific time period for focused concentration. Set aside specific time for tasks like email or social media. Instead of allowing your inbox to distract you and pull you in throughout the day, set specific periods when you can process all your emails at once. To batch your tasks, set aside an intentional amount of time for specific tasks and make an intentional effort to not allow distractions to break that focus. After each focused block of time is up, take a planned break, then begin the next block of focused time to tackle your next task.
- Try using an app like RescueTime or Timely to keep track of tasks and manage your time more effectively.
Let Go of the Drama
Instead of getting caught up in the office gossip, or endlessly complaining to your best friend on Facetime, channel your energy into thoughts, words and actions that benefit your life in positive ways. Negative thoughts can quickly spiral out of control and overcome our minds if you are not aware. When you become more aware of the ways you habitually react to situations, you regain the power to step back, pause and choose how to purposefully act. You can counteract the tendency to jump to the negative by taking time to explicitly remind yourself of the positive aspects of your life.
