Here are some of my Simple | Pure | WholeTM Healthy Favorites for March!

Favorite Ingredient: Camu-Camu Powder

One of the downsides of all the new growth and blooming flowers in the Spring are the accompanying seasonal allergies. As I discussed in my post on Naturally Managing Seasonal Allergies this month, there are many foods can help us naturally calm the immune system and find relief from spring allergies. One of the most potent categories of allergy-calming foods are those rich in Vitamin C. Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine and antioxidant which helps to balance the immune system.

In addition to common sources of this important vitamin including lemons, limes, oranges, red peppers, leafy greens, broccoli, papaya, strawberries, cauliflower, pineapple and kiwi, the camu berry is one of the world’s most abundant sources of vitamin C! This antioxidant-rich berry is also a great source of potassium, calcium, beta-carotene and even protein.

It contains 56 times more vitamin C than a lemon and lends a tart flavor. Camu-camu berries are traditionally cultivated in the Amazonian rainforest and are used to flavor ice creams and beverages in Peru.

Simple Pure Whole Solutions

  • To boost your vitamin C intake, try adding camu-camu powder to smoothies or green juices. It is a perfect addition to my Perk-Up Ginger Smoothie!
  • Make camu-camu punch by dissolving camu powder in filtered water with a few drops of liquid stevia!

Favorite Inspirational Article: The most basic language, dance, brings out the unutterable

This article about therapeutic dance reminds us about the therapeutic power of movement and the importance of the mind-body connection.

The article addresses therapeutic movement and dance in a number of contexts, exploring this modality as a psychotherapy that helps people work through their psychological and emotional issues using dance and movement to allow them to express their feelings.

#dance and movement as therapy www.JenniferWeinbergMD.com

One area of potential is using dance therapy as a component of treatment for eating disorders. Susan Kleinman, a dance movement therapist, explains how she has used movement to reach patients:

The women bury their feelings, and the burial ground is their body…The eating disorder is a coping mechanism that gives them the illusion of control. They focus on food issues and body issues as a diversionary tactic so they don’t have to experience the underlying painful feelings hidden deep inside them that might be caused by experiences such as the death of a loved one, a divorce, verbal, physical or sexual abuse or the failure to live up to high expectations of others.

She goes on to describe how dance therapy can help restore a connection to the body:

Body language is a safe way to tap into the unconscious. The goal is to let the emotions surface and help the patient reconnect with their body and their feelings and then decode or translate them into verbal language.

As a dancer and yoga teacher, I really relate to the therapeutic power of movement. For me, dancing and yoga both allow for an ongoing, ever-evolving exploration of how my body and mind are feeling at the moment and allow me to move through emotions and issues that arise.

Simple Pure Whole Solutions:

Favorite Farmer’s Market Find: Radishes

There are so many great choices for late winter/early spring veggies! One of the most beautiful are radishes.

These detoxifying spring vegetables pack a hefty dose of vitamin C to help calm inflammation and allergies, boost collagen in the skin and reduce free-radicals.  They also contain potassium which helps balance blood pressure.

Radishes can be spicy or sweet depending on the variety and work well both raw in salads or as crudite or sauteed or roasted to bring out the natural sweetness. The leaves of the radish plant can also be enjoyed added raw to salads or cooked like spinach.

I just tried radishes on a salad for the first time recently (I stole a bit of a friend’s!) and love the healthy crunch that they added. They have a fun and different texture than lots of other veggies! And I didn’t know what all of their specific benefits are, so that’s fun to know that they have lots of vitamin C and potassium!

    HI Dr. Jennifer,
Great suggestions for allergies which I have dealt with for many years and there is not a one fit all answer especially if you have food, environmental, seasonal, and chemicals. But eating healthy and Vitamin C is a definite plus for allergies and over health. I also like your suggestions on the body movement – I don’t do yoga but I do practice stretches daily and do Tai Chi as much as I can. Thanks for sharing on Real Food Fridays. Pinned & tweeted.
