On the southern slopes of the Velebit mountain is another must-visit national park, Paklenica. Located slightly inland about 47km northeast from Zadar by the nearby town of Starigrad Paklenica, Paklenica National Park encompasses the small (Mala Paklenica) and the big (Velika Paklenica) canyons which are vertically cut into the mountain and their surrounding area.
Paklenica is known worldwide as a climbing destination due to its amazing rock formations, stunning vistas and diverse wildlife. The park includes beautiful black pine and beech forests, deep canyons, underground caves, and springs with refreshing potable water.
The Park area contains almost 200 km of trails and paths, ranging from an easy educational path to those intended for mountaineers leading to the highest peaks.
Velika Paklenica is around 14km long and between 500 to 800m wide. A moderate 2-hour or so climb through Velika Paklenica takes you to the Mountain Hut Paklenica with several beds at the foot of the ancient mountain villages of Parici and Rmici. Along the canyon, you can admire expansive views of vertical rock formations, such as Anića kuk which attracts climbers from around the globe.
Approximately eight thousand years ago, the first cattle breeders and farmers arrived in the area, and the first fortifications where constructed here during the Bronze Age. Several mills, caves, villages and forts were built in the area. For example, the fort Paklarić was believed to be erected in the late Middle Age (14th-16th century) on top of the hill overlooking the entrance to Velika Paklenica gorge. You can also view ancient houses built into semi-faults at Sklopina abandoned villages within the park.
Have you ever gone climbing?
