September Simple Pure Whole Favorites: Health | Lifestyle | Happiness {Turmeric, Sleep & Obesity, Cauliflower Recipes}
This month has been full of fresh starts and new experiences, as the kids head back to school and we welcome autumn in the northern hemisphere. As Fall begins this month, it is also a wonderful time for us uncover or reconnect with our passionate purpose, to bring greater meaning and fulfillment into life and revisit your goals for the year.
The shift in seasons is also the perfect time to cleanse and renew! My Vegan Cauliflower Apple Walnut Soup with Turmeric is the perfect fall meal to warm you up and boost your immune system to resist getting sick. I am also very excited for the next great group that is preparing to enjoy the Laser Reset Cleanse! There is still time to join us if you would like to heal your body, rejuvenate and prepare for a new season with vitality and great health. This is a chance to nourish your body instead of depriving it, to allow it to work with and for you, for energy, vitality and lasting health!
This lesson in balance is also what I discussed this month on the blog as I explored the Metabolic Derangement which can result from Overtraining and Undereating. To see how I balance my fitness routine and maintain strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health check out my October Training Plan with a Cause which I will follow as I support women with breast cancer through If Girls Ran the World! Here are some of my Simple | Pure | WholeTM Healthy Favorites for September!
Favorite Ingredient: Turmeric
Turmeric is a vibrant spice that lends a beautiful color to dishes like curries. It contains several compounds that are getting more and more attention recently from the scientific community. This rhizome contains curcumin, a powerful antioxidant compound that has been shown to slow memory loss from dementia and support liver health for healthy detoxification. Studies show that curcumin may match some anti-inflammatory drugs in potency making it potentially useful for conditions ranging from arthritis, to inflammatory bowel disease to cancer.
Simple Pure Whole Solution
- Try my Vegan Cauliflower Apple Walnut Soup with Turmeric to both nourish and detoxify the body, to prepare for a healthy fall!
- Enjoy my Balancing and Detoxifying Turmeric Milk to stay balanced with the shifting seasons.
- Given its bright color and antioxidant properties, turmeric has been used by women in India to boost the glow factor and soothe facial skin. You can try sprinkling a bit of turmeric with your facial cream to add a natural glow.
- The vibrant color of turmeric also helps make it a beautiful natural dye. Try coloring your homemade gluten-free play dough or eggs with turmeric for a bright orange color (beware of the potential for staining!) or use 3 Tablespoons of turmeric in a pot of boiling water to naturally dye fabric.
Favorite Inspirational Article: An Early Bedtime for Preschoolers May Reduce the Risk of Obesity
We can all appreciate the increased focus, energy and well-being that comes from a good night’s sleep, but recent research also suggests that getting enough sleep may reduce the risk of being overweight!
Researchers found that preschoolers who were in bed by 8pm were far less likely to be obese during adolescence than children who stayed up late. The study adjusted for factors including socioeconomic status, maternal obesity and parenting style and still concluded that children who went to bed by 8pm at age 4 1/2 were at less than half the risk of teenage obesity as those who were up past 9pm regularly.
This provides more evidence that a regular bedtime and bedtime routine is helpful for young children. We know sleep is crucial for adults as well. Studies demonstrate that even short-term sleep deprivation can contribute to health problems including weight gain, elevated blood pressure and decreased immunity. It is clear that sleep is essential for the healthy function our bodies, brains and hormones. In fact, research shows that even one night of sleep deprivation is associated with signs of brain tissue loss.
Simple Pure Whole Solutions:
It supports healthy detoxification and is low in calories, making it a favorite of participants in my Reset Cleanse. A key phytonutrient which helps support detoxification is sulforaphane. Sulforaphane in cauliflower and other cruciferous vegetables has been found to significantly improve blood pressure and kidney function as well as protecting against certain types of cancer.
