This past week the world witnessed horror and sadness on a day that was meant to acknowledge the value of human kindness. World Kindness Day is observed around the world to highlight the positive power of kindness and the common thread of compassion which connects us all. While we can easily feel powerless in a world full of strife, we each have the power to touch someone in a positive, meaningful way. 

The anguish of terror and suffering is difficult to comprehend and can leave us doubting everything we believed about humanity. While the violence in Paris and in too many places around the globe seems to be the antithesis of kindness, it also brings attention to the strength of humanity and the power of connection, compassion and support that we can have for one another. 

Amidst the overwhelming nature of all that troubles our world, hope may seem naive or like a childish dream. But violence and cruelty often stems from a lack of hope, arising from a vast hopelessness. Conversely, compassion connects us at a soul level and pulls us up when hope seems lost. When we are supported and connected, we can be hopeful. 

In Paris and across the globe, people reached out to help one another; sharing prayers, donating blood, opening their doors to provide sanctuary to those stranded by the violence and gathering in solidarity. These tragedies highlight the suffering of too many around the world but also the power of human kindness.
