October Simple Pure Whole Favorites: Health | Lifestyle | Happiness {Chlorella, Nontoxic Soap, Garlic Recipes}
During October, I have been focused on my mini-Blogtober posts on the blog to empower you with more health and lifestyle knowledge as well as on training for If Girls Ran the World in support of Jill’s Wish to help women with breast cancer. There is still time to help support this important mission, and I would be so grateful for any support you can give to help me help them!
I also ramped up the blog content for Blogtober, with a variety of content focused on Simple Pure Whole Wellness! I shared my experience with home-heavy metal testing from EverlyWell and discussed how common heavy metals can impact our health.
You can start by measuring your individual toxic burden from heavy metals with a test like the EverlyWell home Heavy Metals Test. Get started and save 15% off EverlyWell Tests here to check your levels with a simple home urine test.
One of these areas that heavy metals can impact are hormones, so I shared my strategy for balancing Women’s Hormones with lifestyle and real food nourishment. Your mindset and stress level also have a profound impact on your health, immunity, hormones and metabolism. One place to start is to begin to find yourself in your busy life as you reconnect with your inner wisdom to embrace your passionate purpose!
To stay in balance this fall with food, my Vegan Cauliflower Apple Walnut Soup with Turmeric has been a regular in my fall lunch rotation to support healthy detox and keep my immunity strong heading into the colder weather. You can find more superfood-rich, gluten-free and allergy-friendly recipes in my Fall Action Plan Cookbook!
Healthy food, stress management and lifestyle habits are all key components of bringing the body back into balance and finding greater vitality. Sometimes your body becomes burdened down with the stressors, toxins and illnesses and needs a chance to reset. It is important to listen to the body’s messages that it is becoming out of balance, such as hormonal issues so that you can begin to correct and rebalance the system before further disease develops.
Since inflammation plays such an important role in so many chronic issues including hormonal balance and metabolism, I offer an affordable, to-the-point program to help you find balance, heal chronic illness, get to a healthy weight and revitalize! The Simple | Pure | Whole Laser Reset Cleanse will jumpstart the transformation of your lifestyle, diet and body to leave you feeling better than you have in years!

Here are some of my Simple | Pure | WholeTM Healthy Favorites for October!
Favorite Ingredient: Chlorella
Chlorella is one of my favorite superfoods. It is rich in chlorophyll as well as provides plant-based protein. It is a powerful chelation helper to boost detoxification of heavy metals.
Chlorella is a blue-green algae which provide nutrients including beta-carotene, potassium, phosphorus, biotin, magnesium and B-complex vitamins. As such, it supports healthy hormone function, promotes healthy blood pressure and heart function and aids in detoxification of the body.
Simple Pure Whole Solutions
- Many find the taste of chlorella to be a bit strong, but it mixes well into smoothies to pack a superfood punch! I like to add 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of chlorella to smoothies or fresh juices.
- Chlorella can also add a fresh superfood boost to salads or cold soups. Sprinkle a little on top and enjoy! Do not add chlorella to hot drinks or soups, as the heat can destroy some of its nutritional value.
- Avoid taking chlorella at the same time as vitamin C since it can loosen the binding of heavy metals that chlorella is holding and allow these toxins to go back into the tissues rather than being eliminated.
Favorite Inspirational Article: F.D.A. Bans Sale of Many Antibacterial Soaps, Saying Risks Outweigh Benefits
Recently, the Food and Drug Administration banned the sale of soaps containing certain antibacterial chemicals.
Chemicals like triclosan and triclocarban were originally used by surgeons to wash their hands before operations but have recently become common additives in a variety of products including toothpaste, mouthwash, laundry detergent, fabric and soap. Such compounds are endocrine disruptors and also contribute to drug-resistant pathogens.
The industry will have a year to remove these chemicals from liquid hand and bar soaps. Other products, like toothpaste, may still contain the chemicals.
Studies have shown that soap and water kill bacteria and other microbes just as well as antibacterial soaps, making the risk of these chemicals greater than their benefits.
Simple Pure Whole Solutions:
Garlic supports healthy detoxification and is a favorite of participants in my Reset Cleanse. The sulfur in garlic and onions make them useful for detoxing heavy metals. Garlic also contains a sulfur compound called allicin, which is especially valuable for heart health.
Garlic can also help improve iron metabolism since diallyl sulfides in garlic increase production of ferroportin, a protein which allows stored iron to leave the cells and become available where needed. Selenium is another important nutrient found in garlic. This helps with proper thyroid and metabolic function. Overall, balancing elements and minerals is necessary before you can balance heavy metal toxicity as well.
The antibacterial and antiviral properties of garlic have been appreciated for centuries. One particular disulfide in garlic called ajone has been used to successfully prevent Candida albicans infections. Studies also show that crushed garlic can help prevent infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa in burn patients.
Simple Pure Whole Solutions
- Chop or crush your garlic and let it sit before cooking and eating. This helps to activate allinase enzymes to convert some of the allin to allicin in the garlic.
- Puree fresh garlic with garbanzo beans, tahini, olive oil and a dash of lemon juice for a quick and easy hummus.
- This Gluten-Free Focaccia with Garlic and Tomato from GlutenFreeGoddess is a delicious flatbread that features fragrant garlic.
- Garlic is also featured in this Roasted Garlic Tomato Lentil Salad from Wendy Polisi which makes the perfect vegan side dish or lunch salad.

HI Dr. Jennifer.
I was so glad to hear that they finally banned the antibacterial soap – I made my husband stop using it about 2 years ago because of the many problems I was reading about it. Thanks for sharing all these great informative and beneficial information with us on Real Food Fridays. Pinned & tweeted!

Thank you Marla! It is a step in a positive direction. I am glad you have been making informed decisions for your health too!

I’ve been using goat’s milk soap lately and really like it! It’s super gentle on my skin (I have the most sensitive skin) and smells awesome, too.
Dr. Jennifer L. Weinberg, MD, MPH, MBE
Goat’s milk soap sounds lovely. I will have to pick some up as my skin is really sensitive too. Thanks for the tip!
Mandie
I never knew that about garlic. That’s awesome! I live about 30 minutes from the garlic capitol of the US, and tried garlic ice cream there. It is exactly as gross as you’d imagine, but I use garlic for lots of other things, and may try to use it even more now that I learned what I did from you. Thanks for sharing! <3
Dr. Jennifer L. Weinberg, MD, MPH, MBE
Wow, garlic ice cream sounds very interesting 🙂 Thank you Mandie!
Lisa Runs for Cupcakes

I knew that many antibacterial had been banned, but didn’t realize why. No wonder so many people have endocrine issues!

Thank you for stopping by Lauren!

I have a friend who has been drinking Chlorella everyday for years and she has amazing skin. I wonder if it’s linked. And I’m so glad the FDA finally banned triclosan…there’s a lot not regulated in this industry. It’s about time these things started coming to the light.
