Defend Yourself Against Electromagnetic Radiation (EMFs) and Resist Electromagnetic Stress

Today’s post is part of this month’s special blog series to help you detox your home, workplace, body and environment and protect your health! Follow along to learn about the ways in which the environment impacts our health and become empowered with tools to take action! A key aspect of modern life is a plethora of technological devices which generate electromagnetic fields (EMFs).
Our modern lives revolve around technology, with smartphones, laptops and tablets connecting us at all times. To give us convenient access with these devices, we are surrounded by electromagnetic radiation fields (EMFs) in wifi networks. EMFs are also given off by a variety of other electrical devices.
Electropollution (EMFs) Around Us
Everything is energy and electrical in some sense. Atoms which make up all substances have particles which are constantly moving and creating vibrations and energy that is electrical. This also applies to the human body. Each cell vibrates in a unique pattern, creating an energy flow that impacts our health and wellbeing.
EMFs are given off by power lines, transformers and all devices that plug into an electrical outlet. Some sources, including florescent lights, wi-fi signals, cordless phones, computers, chargers and tvs, emit electo-magnetic fields that are contaminated by high frequency distortions referred to as” dirty electricity”.
When in use, cell phones, laptops and tablets all emits EMFs that can interfere with the natural flow of energy in our bodies. In sensitive individuals, such as those with multiple chemical sensitivities, this can lead to a variety of imbalances.
Studies show that long-term exposure to EMFs can disrupt the human body and contribute to disease. At least 9.8 million Americans suffer from sensitivity to electromagnetic radiation (EMFs), and everyone is impacted to some degree.
The World Health Organization (WHO) states that radiation from cell phones is likely to be a carcinogen, contributing to the development of a variety of cancers, especially brain tumors. Cellphone radiation has also been associated with infertility and diminished sperm quality.
Excessive exposure to EMFs has also been associated with headaches, nausea, dizziness, chronic fatigue, muscle weakness, respiratory distress and behavioral problems. Other research has investigated the impacts of electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields on the circadian system in the human body, as well as on sleep. Electrosensitive patients may react to EMFs with thyroid dysfunction, liver issues and chronic inflammation.
Steps to Reduce Exposure to EMFs and Resist Electromagnetic Stress
To outsmart the hazards of modern technology, there are some helpful strategies you can take. Some of these steps involve reducing exposure to electromagnetic radiation while others help us boost our resistance to electromagnetic stress.
Use a corded network when possible
Since wireless devices emit much more EMFs and dirty electricity than those that are plugged in, using corded networks when possible can help reduce your exposure.
If plugging into your internet connection is not an option, try turning off your wi-fi router when not in use and especially at night when you are asleep.
Cordless phones are another big source of dirty electricity and EMFs, so choose a corded home phone if you use one.
Use your smartphone wisely
The closer your phone is to your body, the more the EMFs will interfere with your cellular processes and energy. Use speaker phone or an “air-tube” hands-free kit when possible.
Keep your phone in airplane mode to turn off all signals to and from the device when not in use.
When not in use, keep your phone away from your body instead of placing it in a pocket or clipping it to your belt.
Since weaker reception requires your phone to use higher power and emit more radiation, try to make calls from your cell phone when you have good reception.
Keep your bedroom device free
The body is in parasympathetic (relaxation and repair) mode when sleeping, a time when it is most vulnerable to the damaging effects of EMFs. To maximize the restorative benefits of sleep and reduce your overall EMF exposure, remove as many electronic devices from the bedroom as possible, including alarm clocks, chargers, cell phones and laptops in sleep mode.
Opt for a battery-operated alarm clock or alarm on a phone in airplane mode and move the bed away from walls with lots of electrical wires running through them.

Use filters and shielding against EMFs
EMF filters and shielding devices can reduce our exposure to EMFs. I diligently use a Defender Pad laptop protector whenever using my laptop and also have a Defender Pad tablet case to reduce EMF exposure from my tablet.
EMF phone cases are also available which have a unique design that allows for cell phone reception while simultaneously reducing your exposure to EMFs emitting from your smartphone. Such products have been independently-tested to block almost all of the EMFs emitted from the phone.
Improve Your Body’s Resistance to Electromagnetic Stress
There are other strategies which can help balance the nervous system and improve the body’s resistance to electromagnetic stress.

Excellent article. I have MCS so I am very aware of the many issues with EMF’s and toxicity. I do use a special case that blocks the EMF with my smartphone and I keep it it that case unless I am using it. I use the speaker when I talk on the phone so to keep it away from my body. I have a wired computer and a wired regular land line phone. I don’t have a clock in my bedroom or any wireless equipment. I have a Himalayan salt in my bed room that I have on during the day but have to turn it off at night because it gives off too much light to sleep with. I also have another salt lamp beside my computer that I keep on constantly and a EMF shield over my computer screen.
I was wondering how much you know about the smart meters that are on many houses including mine? My electric company does not give you an option to have it – you can have taken off and removed but you have to pay all charges which gets into thousands of dollars which is not possible for me. I have checked into blocking options but it that is extremely complicated and not a feasible option for me. I appreciate any suggestions that you would have.

Hi Marla! It sounds like you have great insight into these issues and have really implemented some healthy strategies! I have not personally experienced living with a smart meter, but have heard various impacts from some of my clients and patients. Because they send information wirelessly and therefore emit radiation and “dirty electricity” they seem to be associated with potential health issues, especially for those of us with heightened sensitivity to EMFs and other toxicities. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine has been doing work in this area as well (https://www.aaemonline.org/emf_rf_position.php) but unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be a quick or easy solution once one is installed at your home. This is something I will continue to research further and also look forward to hearing anything else you learn. I am sorry you are dealing with this issue and wish I had a better solution.
