Here are some of my Simple | Pure | WholeTM Healthy Favorites for June!
Favorite Ingredient: Acerola Berry
This month I shared a creamy Black Forest Chocolate Chia Pudding featuring acerola berry powder for a tart cherry flavor and superfood boost! Acerola berries come from the Malpighia emarginata plant, a tropical fruit-bearing shrub. It is also known as Barbados cherry, West Indian cherry and wild crepe myrtle.
Like camu-camu berries, acerola berries are naturally rich in vitamin C and also contain vitamins A, B1, B2 and B3 as well as carotenoids and bioflavonoids. Acerola is an especially potent antioxidant, containing several poly-phenolic anthocyandin compounds including quercetin and kaempferol. The combination of vitamin C and other antioxidants in acerola make it valuable for fighting free-radical damage in the body and reducing inflammation.
They can be eaten like regular cherries raw or combined into puddings, baked goods, jams or juices. Acerola berries are most commonly available in a dried powder.
Simple Pure Whole Solutions
- Try adding powdered acerola to smoothies or juices for a vitamin C boost.
- Acerola adds a tart cherry flavor to drinks, baked goods and puddings. Try mixing some into your overnight oats or next brownie recipe for a superfood boost!
- This Black Forest Chocolate Chia Pudding is a great way to incorporate this superfood into a sweet, healthy, gluten-free and vegan treat!
- The rich vitamin C content of acerola also benefits the skin. Mixing the powder into topical creams may help boost collagen and enhance elasticity of the skin.
Favorite Inspirational Article: The drawing effect: Evidence for reliable and robust memory benefits in free recall
Researchers have found that drawing pictures of information seems to be a strong and reliable way to enhance memory of that information.
The study which appeared in the the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology found that participants often recalled more than twice as many drawn than written words. This suggests that drawing helps create a more cohesive memory trace that integrates visual, motor and semantic information.
While this experiment investigated single word recall only, the benefits of this strategy may be able to be applied to other types of information as well.
We also know that creating art is an effective way to stimulate the brain and relieve stress. Drawing, painting or taking photographs is a way to break free of our normally busy and overwhelming routine. It provides a distraction, giving your brain a break from your usual thoughts. When you get totally immersed in a creative endeavor, you may find yourself in what’s known as “the zone” or in a state of “flow.”
Simple Pure Whole Solutions:
There is nothing quite like the juicy sweetness of fresh, locally-grown berries! Blueberries are coming into peak season in many areas of the country, popping up at the farmer’s market and pick-your-own farms.
These little orbs are packed with antioxidants, fiber and vitamin C. Anthocyanins in blueberries contribute to their beautiful hue and also add free-radical fighting power.
Look for plump organic berries that are deep dark blue with a light blue frosting. Cultivated blueberries are typically found in supermarkets while wild or low-bush varieties are smaller, firmer, tangier and more complex in flavor.
Simple Pure Whole Solutions
- Toss some fresh berries into your granola or cereal, add a burst of sweetness to salads or simply enjoy some beautiful blueberries topped with a dollop of coconut whipped cream!
- This gluten-free vegan blueberry pie from Unconventional Baker is a special way to celebrate these summery berries!
- Blueberry muffins are a classic favorite, and these from Tessa the Domestic Diva are paleo and gluten-free and can be adapted to be made vegan as well!
- These gluten-free, vegan Blueberry Almond Chia Squares from Oh She Glows make the perfect snack for a slow summer day or a lovely breakfast to start the day!
