Krka River National Park consists of several distinct and separated areas with walking paths, hiking, waterfalls and even swimming in the lakes. The Krka River is another natural karst phenomena of Croatia, with seven main travertine waterfalls and total drop of 242 m within the park. It’s source is located near the border of Croatia with Bosnia and Herzegovina in the foothills of the Dinara mountain range from which it flows 73 km (45 mi) towards the Adriatic Sea.
In the lower part of the river’s course you can find several waterfalls including Bilusic (19.6 m), Prijen (15 m), Manojlovac (three waterfalls; 84.5 m), Roski Slap (25.5 m) and Skradinski Buk (37.5 m). The largest waterfall in the park is Skradinski Buk which can be visited by national park-operated boat or by foot from the small picturesque village of Skradin.
The cascades in this area of the park can be viewed via a network of easy walking paths and bridges. Several renovated water mills and washing columns have utilized the power of the river in this area for centuries. Downstream of Skradinski Buk is the Krka river estuary which is about 20 km long, in which freshwater mixes with saltwater.
Another popular waterfall in the park is Roški Slap, a 22.5 m high cascade preceded with a series of smaller “necklace” falls.” Roški slap is also called the ‘vast waterfall’ due to the countless backwaters, cascades and travertine islands.
Between Roski Slap and Skradinski Buk is Visovac Lake (13 km long) which features a small island on which is located a Franciscan Monestary and church, both dating back to 15th century. Boat excursions from Skradinski buk are available for sightseeing tours to Visovac Island.
The small village of Skradin at the mouth of the Krka river is the perfect place to stay for a visit to Krka National Park. You can walk from the town to the park or take a National Park ferry boat which runs frequently in season. The charming narrow streets, authentic cuisine and rich history dating back to early settlements from 3500 B.C. make Skradin a lovely place to visit.
