Emerging research confirms what many of us recognize innately–being close to nature improves our health. The study, using long-term data from the Nurses’ Health Study, found that people who live in “greener” areas with more vegetation have a lower risk of mortality.

Specifically, those with the most greenery within 800 feet of their homes had a 12 percent lower rate of mortality from any non-accidental cause than people living in the least green places. When looking closer, researchers found that participants’ social engagement, mental health, physical activity level of exposure to air pollution likely explained how green spaces make a difference in health outcomes.

  • Bring some greenery into your home and work space. Not only can houseplants improve our mood and add beauty, many plants are also effective at removing indoor air pollution naturally. Try one of these top plants for cleaning your air.
  • Move outdoors! Both movement and nature are so healing to the body and mind. We have evolved to be more relaxed in natural spaces and to be in touch with the earth.
  • Grow a garden. Whether you have a green thumb and a large space or just a window sill with a few potted herbs, growing some greenery can enhance both your mood and dinner!

Favorite Farmer’s Market Find: Arugula

I have been so happy to head back to the Farmer’s Market this month, with its wealth of beautiful local spring produce! One of my favorite veggies recently is arugula. I love its sharp peppery flavor in a fresh salad or gently wilted.

Arugula (a.k.a. rocket) is sweeter and less bitter when the nights remain cool, so it is perfect at this time of year. Like kale and cauliflower, arugula is a cruciferous vegetable belonging to the brassicaceae family. These plants contain a wealth of antioxidants and phytonutrients like glucosinolates that are powerful at supporting detoxification and balancing stress in the body.
