This past month we entered a season that tends to be filled with gatherings, gift giving and gratitude.

Favorite Inspirational Article: The preference for experiences over possessions
This month I shared some strategies for embracing minimalism during the holidays. This approach can help you add more meaning and less stress to your celebrations without the need for more stuff or more obligations.
Studies like this one back up the science behind how minimalism can lead to mindfulness and greater happiness and fulfillment in life. For example, the researchers found that experiences like theater tickets or a meal at a nice restaurant resulted in greater well-being than gifts of material possessions.
The results suggested that experiences produce more happiness regardless of the amount spent or the income of the consumer. These experiences also tend to satisfy higher order needs like the need for social connectedness and vitality, making us feel more alive and part of something greater.
“These findings support an extension of basic need theory, where purchases that increase psychological need satisfaction will produce the greatest well-being,” said Ryan Howell, assistant professor of psychology at San Francisco State University.
