What are EMFs and Electrostress?
Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are electric and magnetic fields which travel together in an invisible waveform. They are created by both natural processes and electronic devices. Depending on the source and frequency, EMFs can interfere with the natural flow of energy in our bodies.
Natural EMFs are given off by the sun and the earth itself. EMFs are also given off by manmade devices including:
- power lines
- transformers
- all devices that plug into an electrical outlet
- fluorescent lights
- wi-fi signals
- cordless phones
- microwaves
- computers
- chargers
- TVs
- cell phones
- laptops
- tablets
The safety of low-frequency EMF exposure is controversial, but many sensitive individuals report a variety of imbalances and effects when exposed to too much electrostress. Since the body has its own electric fields, especially in the nervous system and heart, there is concern that some EMFs may disrupt the body’s natural rhythms. Mitochondria and cells also operate based on electrical conductivity.
Electrostress When Flying
Air travel exposes you to various forms of electrostress. There are several ways you may be exposed to EMFs when flying.
Cosmic radiation is a form of ionizing radiation which is naturally produced by the sun, stars and other aspects of cosmos. When you fly at high altitudes, you are less protected from this cosmic radiation by the earth’s magnetic field and are therefore exposed to greater electrostress.
There are also numerous sources of exposure to EMFs when flying wthin airplanes themselves. These occur from various sources including jet engines, communications equipment, computers, electrical wiring and sensors and static electricity.
Many planes also now provide wifi which is made up of radio-frequency microwave radiation. The plane’s metal fuselage can intensify the effects of this radiofrequency radiation (although more and more planes are being built out of carbon fiber-based composites which are less conductive of this type of radiation).
Studies have had mixed results about the impacts of EMFs when flying, but some suggest that those who fly frequently, like flight crews, may have an increased frequency of chromosome damage and resulting health conditions including some cancers including breast and skin cancers (these flight crews are also exposed to other potential hazards that may play a role in cancer risk including irregular working hours and disturbances of circadian rhythm). Airline flight crews are currently classified as “radiation workers” since they are consistently exposed to this radiation.
Due to these various forms of electrostress, some recommend considering frequent flyers as at risk if flying over 100,000 miles a year, an amount that may equal around 20 extra chest X-rays a year.
How to Proactively Shield Yourself from Electrostress and EMFs When Flying and Traveling
Fortunately, it is possible to reduce exposure to EMFs when flying and take steps to shield yourself from electrostress when traveling. It is always great to be informed and proactive when it comes to your health and take reasonable steps to reduce potentially harmful exposures, especially if you are sensitive or have existing health issues.
Listen Without Radiation: DefenderShield Air Tube Headphones
When traveling, I like to load up my iPad or iPhone with a mix of inspirational, informative and entertaining podcasts and music. Headphones are worn very close to the body (in the ear) and are often used for long periods of time. Like anything wired, headphones conduct radiation and can, therefore, emit EMFs. Wireless or Bluetooth headphones use radio frequency radiation which is another form of EMFs.
One way of reducing your electrostress exposure when using headphones is to use an air tube headset (affiliate link). An air tube headset uses hollow air tubes to conduct the sound from your cell phone using “sound waves”.
These DefenderShield® Stereo Headphones (affiliate link) combine hollow air tubes with advanced speakers to deliver higher fidelity sound without exposing you to EMF radiation.
This technology delivers crystal clear sound via hollow air tubes rather than traditional wires and contains no metal conductors, eliminating EMF radiation exposure to your head. The magnetic earbud end-caps provide a quick and easy way to clip these lightweight and flexible headphones around your neck and the built-in hands-free microphone with On/Off – Play/Stop switch is convenient for quickly navigating through podcasts and music.
These headphones (affiliate link) are compatible with smartphones, tablets and other 3.5 mm plug audio devices, making them a stable in my carry on. I find them comfortable to wear even on long flights.
Eat an Anti-oxidant Rich Diet Before, During and After Flying
Antioxidants naturally protect your cells from free radical damage, including that caused by radiation and EMFs when flying. They help the body balance inflammation and reduce your susceptibility to DNA damage (Kivrak et al. 2017).
Research looking at pilots has found that eating foods loaded with antioxidants such as colorful fruit and vegetables was associated with much less chromosomal damage. Specifically, high combined intakes of vitamins C and E, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, and lutein-zeaxanthin from food protecting against cumulative DNA damage in radiation-exposed persons.
Pack your diet with anti-oxidant rich foods around the time of travel. Focus on:
- High vitamin C containing fruit and vegetables (>40 mg vitamin C per serving): cantaloupes, oranges, orange juice, grapefruit, grapefruit juice, strawberries, broccoli, and green peppers.
- High vitamin E containing foods: almonds, raw seeds, Swiss chard, mustard greens, spinach and kale.
- High carotenoid containing vegetables: tomatoes, tomato juice, tomato sauce, yellow squash, and carrots (raw or cooked).
- High β-carotene fruit and vegetables: carrots (raw or cooked), yams or sweet potatoes, yellow squash, spinach (raw or cooked), cantaloupe, and peaches, apricots and plums.
- β-cryptoxanthin rich fruit: citrus fruits
- Lutein-zeaxanthin rich vegetables: green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, and romaine lettuce.
Some of my favorite travel snacks are these antioxidant-rich Egg-Free Nut-Free Carrot Cake Vegan Coconut Macaroons!
Use a Laptop Shield
Many of us use long flights as the perfect chance to catch up on work, binge-watch a new TV series or watch a few movies on a laptop. While convenient, laptops sit close to the body, exposing you to EMF radiation.
An EMF-blocking barrier like the DefenderShield® Laptop Sleeve (affiliate link) can be placed between your laptop and your body to help shield yourself from a broad spectrum of potentially harmful radiation and heat emissions. The sleeve (affiliate link) is made up of multiple layers of shielding materials that block, divert or absorb almost 100% of EMF radiation in a slim design that is easily portable. As a bonus, this laptop sleeve (affiliate link) also protects your laptop, notebook computer or tablet while on the go with its padded compartment to protect your device from damage.
You can also use shielding options like this organic bamboo EMF radiation protection blanket which blocks up to 99% of wireless EMF radiation in the environment in airplanes, airbnbs, hotels and on-the-road.
Improve Your Body’s Resistance to Electromagnetic Stress
There are other strategies which can help balance the nervous system and improve the body’s resistance to electromagnetic stress and EMFs when flying. Grounding or making direct contact with the earth is thought to help eliminate the ambient voltage that comes from everyday electrical power sources and can be helpful after a long flight.
When you arrive at your destination, take a walk on the beach or in the (organic) grass of a park if possible. Grounding or earthing involving direct physical contact with the vast supply of electrons on the surface of the Earth has been shown to promote intriguing physiological changes and subjective reports of well-being including decreased pain and improved sleep. Science suggests that “The Earth’s negative charges can create a stable internal bioelectrical environment for the normal functioning of all body systems which may be important for setting the biological clock, regulating circadian rhythms, and balancing cortisol levels.” (Chevalier et al., 2012).
There are also devices which are designed to reduce the impacts of electromagnetic fields on the body. For example, Aires Tech devices (affiliate link) act as microprocessors and resonator antennas which help to normalize waves so they do not interfere with the body’s function.
I have added the Aires Defender Infinity (affiliate link) to my travel essentials to help reduce the impact of EMFs when flying. This small device provides personal protection to reduce the harmful effects of electromagnetic radiation. You can place it in your pocket or bag, put it under your pillow while sleeping or hang it around your neck.

Thank you for this post. I think the greatest danger from EMF’s is our lack of knowledge and understanding about them. Education is surely needed but seems unavailable. I appreciate this valuable info.
