The mesentery is a collection of connective tissue which joins the intestines to the abdominal wall. While not truly “new,” the mesentery has recently received renewed attention as a continuous organ.
First described in 1508 by Leonardo DaVincii, the mesenteric connective tissue was long believed to primarily be an anatomical support structure to hold the intestines in place and maintain circulatory channels and nerves.
Recently, emerging evidence suggests that the mesentery functions as one continuous organ. In addition to enclosing and protecting vascular, neurological and connective tissues, the mesentery is also a major site of lymphatic-based immunity.
As such, the mesentery is involved in immune, hormonal, circulatory and metabolic processes. For example, research shows that the mesenteric lymphatic vessels are directly linked to the aging process and are a main driver of intestinal immunity.
At least 70% of the body’s immune system is located in the gastrointestinal tract making the health of the mesentery crucial for immune health. A healthy intestinal lymphatic system is necessary for maintaining a balanced microbiome and maintaining the integrity of the intestinal lining which helps keep out harmful substances and pathogens while selectively allowing for absorption of nutrients. The intestinal lymphatics also play a key role in delivering absorbed dietary fats to the liver for processing.
Keep Your Mesentery Healthy
While we are still discovering the full extent of the mesentery’s roles in health, there are some steps you can take to keep your mesentery and overall lymphatic system functioning well.
Reduce Oxidative Stress and Damage
Oxidation occurs throughout the body as part of metabolic processes, producing free radicals that can damage or cells and DNA. Oxidative stress damages the lymph vessels and breaks down their ability to effective transport lymph fluid and wastes. Oxidative stress has also been associated with numerous health conditions including chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, anxiety, insomnia, cancer, and more.
To reduce oxidative stress, you need to avoid exposure to unnecessary oxidation and increase your intake of antioxidants which help to mitigate free radicals and prevent damage.
- Avoid excess processed foods, added sugars and artificial additives.
- Practice meaningful stress reduction. Oxidation increases when we are physically and/or emotionally stressed, so having an effective routine for coping with daily stress is key.
- Avoids toxins. Choose organic food and natural personal care products to reduce your toxic exposure.
- Eat your antioxidants. Foods can support the body’s ability to deal with free radicals. Foods that are high in antioxidants like kale, berries, green tea and spices like cinnamon, ginger and turmeric help prevent oxidative stress.
- Boost Glutathione. Glutathione is one of the most powerful antioxidants and is made from amino acids including glycine, glutamate and cysteine as well as sulfur. Foods like asparagus, walnuts, spinach, garlic and cruciferous vegetables support the body in making adequate glutathione.

Nourish Your Microbiome
The gut microbiome is made up of the microbes which colonize the digestive tract. These microbes play essential roles in maintaining healthy physiology, influencing everything from hormones to mood to metabolism to overall inflammation in the body.
To keep your bacteria balanced and healthy, focus on:
- Removing processed foods and sugars
- Including naturally fermented foods such as raw sauerkraut and kombucha
- Supporting digestion with prebiotic foods and fiber such as from artichokes, garlic, turmeric, leeks and asparagus
- Practicing meaningful stress management
Decongest Your Lymph
To stay healthy and keep the immune system balanced, it is necessary to keep the lymph flowing well.
- Stay hydrated. One of the most common causes of lymph congestion is dehydration. Sipping warm water throughout the day helps to keep the lymph flowing well.
- Eat red foods. Ayurvedic medicine teaches that naturally red foods support lymph flow. Beets are particularly valuable, as they help thin the bile for healthy fat digestion, scrub the intestinal villi where the lymphatic vessels originate and help the lymph move properly.
- Dry brush. Dry brushing and lymphatic massage help to support healthy lymphatic flow in the skin-associated lymphatic tissue. Massage your body gently, working toward the heart, paying special attention to the head, neck, feet and abdomen where lymphatics are concentrated.
