This vegan turmeric latte has a gorgeous vivid golden color and offers ingredients which are part of a traditional Ayurvedic approach to balance. Turmeric has long been used in Ayurvedic medicine and is believed to have anti-inflammatory and immune supporting properties.
Colder weather can aggravate vata dosha energy in the body in some individuals, an imbalance which can become exacerbated due to caffeine, stress, disrupted routines, cold weather, and dry cold food and drink. This vata imbalance is associated with anxiety, worry, insomnia and overwhelm.
Fortunately, Ayurveda offers several traditional soothing remedies to help regain balance. This Balancing + Detoxifying Hot Spiced Vegan Turmeric Latte (Golden Milk) is warming to the body, incorporating warming spices like ginger, cinnamon, black pepper and cardamom to pacify vata.
Turmeric is astringent, pungent and bitter in taste which helps balance vata and the other doshas along with supporting liver detoxification, benefitting immune function and assisting digestion. The combination of some healthy fats from the coconut butter and black pepper help to boost the absorption and benefits of turmeric.
Hot Spiced Turmeric Milk
Ingredients
- 2 cups almond, coconut or other milk of your choice
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1 teaspoon ground Ceylon cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1 tablespoon raw local honey or maple syrup
Preparation
Place milk in a small saucepan and bring to a gently boil. Reduce heat and stir in spices and coconut oil. Add honey or maple syrup to taste. Enjoy warm!
Traditionally, turmeric milk has been used to treat colds and flu due to its antiviral and antibacterial properties and is also purported to soothe a sore throat or a cough with its high anti-oxidant content. Drinking this golden milk may aid relaxation and is a lovely winter ritual to incorporate before bed.
Be aware that turmeric’s rich color can stain surfaces like plastic blenders or countertops. I find that white vinegar or a paste of baking soda and water can help scrub off any stains.
