One of the most profound paths to intentional self-growth is vulnerability. 

As we go through life, we often take on layers of armor. We feel we have to be strong and push aside our feelings. Society encourages us in a variety of subtle and not-so-subtle ways to not let things affect us emotionally, to not show too much of our true self.

Vulnerability can feel scary, exciting and raw but also brings a new realm of possibilities into our lives
.  To be vulnerable involves allowing yourself to feel and express those emotions we often stuff inside.

Vulnerability means not needing to keep yourself so busy that you fill up the space within you so you don’t need to truly experience or feel.

Vulnerability means you allow yourself to embody your core values and be who you are truly meant to be.

This process of opening yourself up and peeling back the shields is a process. When you embrace this opportunity for self-growth you can begin to live a more intentional life

Becoming vulnerable allows you to accept yourself in total–flaws, brilliance, emotions, weaknesses, beauty and fears. Allowing yourself to be vulnerable opens the door for self-growth. Vulnerability is the first step down the path of more fully utilizing our talents and taking action to modify our weakness. 

Embracing instead of fearing vulnerability allows us to move from a fixed mindset to a mindset of growth. Instead of being stuck believing that your talents and abilities are static and that your value and self-esteem is defined by these skills, a growth mindset proposes that your abilities are fluid and changeable so that you are open to learn more skills, embrace more talents and work towards embracing your natural abilities

To embrace vulnerability and work towards intentional self-growth, try these mindset shifts:

  • Consciously engage in a wide range of feelings to stop disengaging from your life.
  • Observe instead of judging your emotions.
  • Put yourself out therewrite an article that truly expresses your values, speak your truth, embrace a hobby, job or experience because it allows you to live your truth not because you feel like you should do it.
  • Do something you has been dearly wanting to do but have held back out from doing out of fear. Let go of the need to please others or be perfect and embrace the experience and what it can teach you.
  • Be aware. Open yourself up to the present moment. This will allow you to tune into what is holding you back so that you can begin to let go and move forward.
  • Find the Courage to Shift into Compassion and Forgiveness. Start with the wellness prescriptions in Chapter 10 of The Whole Cure.
