Blue Light from Electronics Disrupts Your Circadian Rhythms
In a recent post, I wrote about the science behind how blue light can disrupt your body clock and natural circadian rhythms potentially leading to a variety of health impacts ranging from insomnia to cardiovascular disease to weight gain to mood imbalances.
Light has such a powerful influence on your circadian rhythms and irregular light exposure is one of the most common reasons I see for disrupted sleep and other common issues.
It is a normal part of our modern lifestyle to rely on electric lighting after dark and to use smartphones, tablets, televisions and computers late into the evening. These devices generally give off light that is especially rich short or blue wavelengths of light (400-490 nm).
During the day, blue light can be helpful since it boosts mood, attention and reaction times, but at night when the body is supposed to be shifting into rest mood, blue light can disrupt the body’s internal clock. For example, the use of light-emitting devices immediately before bedtime increases alertness at that time, leading to difficulty falling asleep and less REM sleep.
Why I Wear Blue Light Blocking Glasses and How They Could Help Your Health Too!
Based on this science, I have started regularly wearing blue light blocking glasses in the evening as one of my #SimplePureWholeHabits. Emerging technology like blue light blocking glasses may help you manage light exposure to benefit your health and performance.
Be sure to discuss these options with your physician and eye doctor before making changes to your lifestyle or corrective lenses. Regular eye exams are important for visual and overall health, so if you are experiencing eye strain, blurred vision, headaches or other symptoms when using electronic devices be sure to discuss these symptoms with your eye doctor.
If you do use technology after dark, wear blue light blocking glasses.
The American Optometric Association refers to the eye fatigue, strain and irritation you may experience after staring out a screen all day as Computer Vision Syndrome or Digital Eye Strain. This condition may contribute to eyestrain, headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes and neck and shoulder pain.
Blue light blocking glasses (affiliate link) may help combat the blue light exposure from electronic devices and reduce resulting eye strain. These blue light blocking glasses are available in different forms. More traditional blue light blocking glasses have amber-colored lenses (affiliate link) and were originally designed for the NASA space program to protect astronauts’ eyes from powerful UV rays. Many of these amber colored lenses block almost all blue light but may seem bulky or obviously noticeable.
Another option to block some of the blue light from electronics and also help with digital eye strain overall, are modern blue light blocking glasses with lenses that are virtually clear (affiliate link) and have a blue-light-blocking polymer directly incorporated into the lens material to help absorb some blue light and prevent it from passing through the lens to your eye.
For example, GlassesUSA.com offers a digital block coating (affiliate link), which can be applied to a range of their glasses across all prescriptions or also on non-prescription lenses. The company reports that the coating reflects some of the blue light from hitting your eyes without the dramatic color change that you get when wearing amber glasses.
Personally, I regularly wear these glasses with digital screen protection to block blue light (affiliate link), help to keep my hormones more balanced and improve my sleep.
As an editor, educator and consultant, I use the computer for long stretches of time every day and find that the contrast and readability of the screen are improved when wearing my blue light blocking glasses. The slight warm yellow tint of the lenses is barely noticeable when viewing the world, and, from the outside, the lenses basically look like any other prescription lens.
How to Buy Glasses Online + AnAffordable Option to Purchase Blue Light Blocking Glasses
You can purchase regular prescription or non-prescription glasses in any frame you choose with this special lens coating which appear just like normal glasses and can be worn on a daily basis instead of the more obvious bulky yellow/orange/amber lensed shielding glasses (affiliate link).
Since glasses can be a significant investment, I am always looking for affordable and accessible options for my clients. I have been pleased with my experience with GlassesUSA.com (affiliate link) and their online platform which allows consumers to purchase eyewear from the convenience of their homes.
They offer a wide selection of high-quality frames from designer brands and their own in-house frames as well as a variety of lenses (affiliate links) from standard single vision, through bifocal and progressive lenses, transitions lenses, tinted, mirrored, and also various lenses thickness (from thin to super thin) at affordable prices up to 70% off retail prices.
Since it can feel uncertain to purchase eyeglasses online, GlassesUSA.com (affiliate link) offers free shipping and returns and a 100%
money back guarantee where you can get a full refund within 14 days of delivery, no questions asked, in addition to their 365-day product warranty.
My glasses were processed quickly and arrived within less than a week of shipping in a nice hard case with a cleaning cloth included.
Some Tips for Purchasing Glasses Online
To buy glasses online, you will need a recent prescription from an eye doctor. You can generally request this from your provider.
To begin selecting a frame that will fit and work well for your face, you can start with a pair of old glasses that fit you properly if you have one available. Inside each pair of glasses, here are three numbers (usually on the inside of the temple piece) that specify the lens, bridge, and temple measurements. You can start with these size ranges to sort through the glasses online by size.
I liked the ease of shopping online without the need to travel to a physical store to try on many pairs of frames and make a selection. You can virtually try on any pair of GlassesUSA.com frames by uploading your photo and see yourself through the virtual mirror on their site (Virtual Try-On) (affiliate links), which was very helpful with the frame selection process.
You can also narrow down your search by shape, color, material, and price, which was very helpful for me when selecting a frame.
I have a relatively narrow face but medium nose bridge width and like a classic frame. I find that tortoise frames complement my hair, skin and eye color best, so I selected these Colin frames in Tortoise (affiliate link).
